What is FEMAR and what is it used for? FEMARA tablets are dark yellow, round, slightly convex, film-coated tablets with bevelled edges, debossed with "FV" on one side and "CG" on the other side. Each film-coated tablet contains 2.5 mg of letrozole. FEMAR is presented in blister packs containing 30 film-coated tablets. Letrozole belongs to a group of medicines called aromatase inhibitors. Treatment with Femara is a hormonal (or "endocrine") breast cancer treatment. The development of breast cancer is often stimulated by the female sex hormones estrogen. By blocking an enzyme ("aromatase") involved in estrogen production, FEMAR reduces the amount of estrogen and thus can prevent the growth of breast cancers that need estrogen in order to grow. As a result, tumor cells slow or cease to progress and/or spread to other parts of the body. In addition, FEMAR can be used both to reduce the size of the tumor before breast surgery and to help prevent the recurrence of the tumor after breast surgery. Monitoring of FEMAR therapy Femara should only be taken under strict medical supervision. Your doctor will check your condition regularly to check whether the treatment is having the desired effect. Your doctor may also decide to monitor your bone health because this medicine can cause thinning or damage to bones (osteoporosis, osteoporosis). Ask your doctor if you have questions about how Femara works or why this medicine has been prescribed for you.
